Why it matters

What it changes for you.

When a balance is wrong, the question is always the same: where did the money go? If your system only stores balances, there's no answer. If it stores both sides of every movement, the answer is a query.

The ledger under Bridge posts every movement as a double-entry transaction: what left one account and what arrived in another, in the same transaction. Accounts, wallets, escrow, savings and offline payments all post to it, so there is one history for all of them.

Because every balance is the sum of its entries, any account can be read as it was at any moment, and nothing can change a balance without leaving an entry behind.

How it works

Step by step.

  1. A movement is requested

A transfer, a bill, a top-up, an escrow release: anything that moves money.

  2. Both sides are posted together

The debit and the credit, and any fee, post in one transaction or not at all.

  3. Balances follow from entries

No balance is stored on its own; it's the sum of what was posted.

  4. History is queryable

Read any account at any past moment, or every entry behind a figure.

What you can switch on

Built in, not bolted on.

Both sides, always

A debit never posts without its credit. Money can't appear or vanish between accounts.

Point-in-time reads

Any account, as it was at any moment: month end, the time of a complaint, the start of a dispute.

One ledger for everything

Accounts, wallets, escrow, savings, communities and offline balances all post to the same place.

Fees as entries

Fees and taxes post to their own accounts in the same transaction as the payment they belong to.

Reversals, not edits

A correction is a new entry that reverses the old one. Nothing is overwritten.

Exports for your books

Export entries to your accounting system; the ledger is the source, your general ledger the summary.

  • Every movement posts both sides, in the same transaction
  • Query any account's history and balance at a past moment
  • One ledger under accounts, wallets, escrow, savings and offline
Use cases

Month-end that closes on day one

Finance spends a week at the start of every month reconciling the app's balances with the bank. Differences turn up and nobody can say which transaction caused them.

  1. Every app movement posts to the ledger as double entry
  2. At month end, finance reads every account at 23:59 on the last day
  3. Totals by account type are exported to the accounting system
  4. Any difference is traced to the entries behind it

Month-end is a report, and every difference has a transaction ID.

Answering 'where did my money go?'

A customer says ₦20,000 disappeared. Support can see the balance dropped but not why, so the ticket escalates to engineering.

  1. Support opens the customer's account history
  2. Each movement shows both sides: what left and where it arrived
  3. The ₦20,000 is a bill payment the customer forgot, with its token
  4. Support shares the receipt from the same entry

Support answers on first contact, from the same record finance uses.

Corrections an auditor can follow

A teller posted a deposit to the wrong customer. In the old system the record was edited, and the auditor flagged the missing trail.

  1. The wrong deposit stays in the history
  2. A reversal entry takes it back out, with a reason
  3. A new entry posts it to the right customer
  4. The auditor sees all three, in order

Mistakes are corrected without rewriting history, and the trail is complete.

What it won't do

Honest limits.

  • It is not your general ledger: export to your accounting system.

Questions about ledger

Is this our general ledger?

No. It's the ledger behind every customer's money. Export summaries to your accounting system, which stays your general ledger.

Can an entry be edited?

No. Corrections are new entries that reverse the old ones, so the history is always complete.

How far back can we read balances?

As far back as the account goes: balances are computed from posted entries, so every past moment can be read.
