Why it matters

What it will change.

Your customers want to use their accounts with you inside other apps: a budgeting tool that reads transactions, a lender that confirms income, a merchant that takes payment straight from the account.

Open banking on Bridge will let you serve those apps with the customer's consent: account information, payment initiation, variable recurring payments and confirmation of funds, with dynamic client registration for the apps themselves.

It serves your accounts to others. It does not aggregate other banks' accounts for you.

How it works

Step by step.

  1. An app registers

Third-party apps will register their software and get credentials through dynamic client registration.

  2. The customer consents

They'll see exactly what the app wants, for how long, and approve it in your app.

  3. The app reads or pays

Within the consent: accounts, transactions, a payment, or a yes or no on funds.

  4. The customer stays in control

Consents will be withdrawable at any time, and the app's access will end at once.

What it will do

Built in, not bolted on.

Account information

Balances and transactions within the consent window.

Payment initiation

An app will start a payment the customer approves.

Variable recurring payments

Payments within limits the customer set once.

Confirmation of funds

A yes or no, without showing the balance.

Dynamic client registration

Apps will register themselves, without email back and forth.

Consents you can withdraw

Customers will see every app with access and be able to end it.

  • Account information and payment initiation
  • Variable recurring payments and funds confirmation
  • Dynamic client registration
Use cases

How businesses could use it.

Illustrative businesses, not customers. Figures are made up to show the flow.

A microfinance bank in Lagos · Banks, MFBs & PSBs

Income checks for lenders

Lenders ask the bank's customers for six months of statements as PDFs, which are easy to fake and slow to check.

  1. The lender's app will ask for read access to transactions
  2. The customer will approve in the bank's app
  3. The lender will read verified inflows directly

Customers will get loans faster, and the lender will read statements that can't be edited.

An online store in Abuja · Merchants & e-commerce

Pay by bank at checkout

Customers of the bank want to pay the store directly from their account, without typing card details.

  1. The store will start a payment for the order amount
  2. The customer will approve it in their bank app
  3. The store will receive confirmation

Customers will pay from their account in two taps.

A gym chain in Lagos · Merchants & e-commerce

Subscriptions without a card

Members' cards expire and monthly payments fail. Members would rather pay from their account within a limit.

  1. The member will set a monthly limit for the gym
  2. The gym will collect within it each month
  3. The member will be able to cancel from their bank app

Monthly payments that won't fail because a card expired.

What it won't do

Honest limits.

  • It serves your accounts to others; it does not aggregate other banks.
  • It carries no conformance certification.
